Our bedroom finished: Quick notes

Our bedroom is finished!! And with this, the main areas of our bedroom suite are finished — the foyer, the walk-in closet with the laundry area, our bathroom, and now our bedroom. I still have one more area to finish (the storage closet), but that will have to wait a while. At least for now, I can close the doors on that closet (which is currently a bathroom) and everything else is finished. So without further delay, here’s our new finished bedroom…

I am absolutely thrilled with how this bedroom turned out. It was a massive undertaking. If you’ve been around a while, you know that this room used to be our home gym. (You can see the whole before and after of our home gym here.) And it would probably still be our home gym if we hadn’t had some major flooring issues that required all new subfloors and hardwood flooring. It was during that catastrophe that we decided to turn this area of our home into our master bedroom suite. And in hindsight, I’m so thankful that it turned out the way it did. I think using this area of the house as our bedroom suite has surpassed my expectations and turned out so much better than our original plans of building an addition onto the house to include a brand-new master bedroom and closet.

So let me show you how this area has evolved over the years. When we bought the house, this room looked like this…

bedroom makeover - before - what it looked like when we bought the house, a fixer upper built in 1948

And then I turned the room into a home gym, which looked like this…

colorful home gym with striped walls, white curtains, and black commercial carpet squares

And now this is our bedroom, and that same view looks like this…

The room has always had a little “hallway” in the entrance, but it used to have a door leading to this little hallway and into the room.

We still have that little hallway leading from the foyer into the bedroom, but it’s about three feet shorter now than it was when the room was a home gym. And now, there’s no door from the foyer into the bedroom. I had that door, and the wall around it, removed so that the two areas are open to each other.

Here’s what the wall on the front of the house looked like when we bought the house. It had a window, and you can see that there was a closet on the wall to the left of this wall.

When this was our home gym, we kept that window and I had the closet area opened up (i.e., there were no doors on the closet) so that it felt more open to the room.

But when we decided to use this as our bedroom, I had the closet removed completely to make the actual bedroom larger, and we had the window replaced with a door.

Here’s a better look at how the wall with the closet looked when we bought the house…

And here’s how it looked when it was opened up for our home gym.

And now those walls that surrounded the closet area are completely gone, which left more room for a recliner and dresser. Removing that closet make the room feel so much bigger.

And then looking back towards the entrance to the room, you can see that the closet formed that little “hallway” entrance into the room, but it was only about three feet long, which was the depth of the closet behind that wall. You could still see the door.

But when we moved the wall in the hallway (i.e., the foyer) to square up the room next to this one to turn it into our bathroom, that made the “hallway” entrance to the room about twice as long, and you could no longer see the door from this view.

But now that the closet walls are gone, and the door and wall surrounding the door are gone, the area looks much more open. There’s still a little hallway from the foyer into the bedroom, but it’s back to being about three feet long again. And without the door and wall surrounding the door, it feel much more open now.

When we bought the house, this wall of the room was a solid wall. The original master bedroom was on the other side of that wall, and both this room and the original master bedroom were accessible via doorways in the hallway.

But when we turned the original master bedroom into our new master bathroom, we moved the wall in the hallway, closed up the door that originally went from the hallway into that room, and added a new doorway from the home gym into the new master bathroom. Our original plan was to add a new master bedroom on the other side of our new bathroom. Had we stuck with that plan, all three rooms — the home gym, the new master bathroom, and our new master bedroom — would have all been connected with doorways leading from one room to the next.

But now that this room is our bedroom, our bathroom is very conveniently located through this door.

Those are all of the before and after picture I have for you, so now let’s get into the details. The wallpaper that I used isn’t available anymore, but it’s very similar to a grasscloth wallpaper by Thibault. So if you’re searching for teal grasscloth wallpaper, I suggest looking there first.

The ceramic birds are from Amazon (affiliate link), and I love birds, so I used a whole lot of them and created a freeform wall installation with them.

I have to say that the fandelier has far exceeded our expectations. Matt has commented several times now how much he loves it. We’ve both been surprised at just how much air flow comes from that small fan.

I took so many pictures (a ridiculous number of pictures, to be honest), so I’ll keep my commentary to a minimum and just let y’all look around.

I had originally planned to frame the TV and then find a pretty art screensaver for the TV. But in the end, I decided that I don’t really mind that there’s a huge TV on the wall of our bedroom, and I don’t want to disguise it. I’ll let the actual artwork be artwork, and I’ll let the TV just be a TV. I’m actually quite satisfied with how it looks, and more importantly, it functions great for us.

I think that just about covers everything! If I’ve left anything out that you want more information about, just let me know!

Addicted 2 Decorating is where I share my DIY and decorating journey as I remodel and decorate the 1948 fixer upper that my husband, Matt, and I bought in 2013. Matt has M.S. and is unable to do physical work, so I do the majority of the work on the house by myself. You can learn more about me here.
