How paint pillow: Quick notes

Looking for an easy idea to update a pillow? Why not paint it? Here’s the step-by-step on how to paint a pillow.

I know you are probably thinking that this is just another DIY post.

It might look like that.

But actually?

It is SO MUCH more.

This picture was taken at the start of the DIY, where I still thought it was going to be amazing.

Except?

Except it did NOT TURN out.

Not. Even. Close.

So this post is actually about encouragement. Sometimes a project doesn’t turn out like you planned and it can be overwhelming and discouraging and irritating and a little sad.

I know. I completely understand. I know it looks like everything always turns out around here, but truth? About half of my projects don’t turn out like I thought they would.

So when this project went south? I followed the advice my father used to give me.

“KariAnne,” he would say. “You need to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.”

So here’s the story of a defeat that turned into a victory.

Thanks, Dad.

Let’s start at the very beginning.

I am in the middle of making over the front porch for spring, and I ordered these pillows.

They were too good of a deal to pass up.

They come in a set of two, and they are under $13. I have these benches on the front porch and I replace the pillows every spring because the Texas heat is so harsh on outdoor fabrics, so I have to keep it affordable and these pillows were perfect.

You can see the pillows here.

The pillows arrived, and I put them on the benches, and I just thought they needed something.

front porch of a white house decorated with potted plants and pink flowers, perfect for inspiration on how to decorate a porch for summer. black lanterns line the steps, while a green wreath adorns the door framed by white columns and dark shutters.

Here was my inspiration.

See these planters that I have on my porch?

I looked at the monogram and I thought it would be perfect if I painted it on the pillows.

bold, black letters "kwd" arranged in a circular monogram, with each letter stylized and elongated to fit within the shape of the circle, on a white background.

So I recreated the monogram with an AI program.

It was so easy.

And if anyone else is interested in this project (especially when I show you how amazing it turned out), I’d be more than happy to create a monogram like this for you.

Just email me at thistlewoodfarms@yahoo.com with the three letters you want in the monogram (in the right order) and I’ll create it for you and email it back to you.

I don’t want a little monogram challenge to stand in the way of you creating this amazing pillow project.

a white paper with the bold black letters "kwd" in a circular monogram design, placed on a fabric with a black and white irregular polka dot pattern.

So now we have the monogram.

And the pillow.

All that’s left is to paint the monogram onto the pillow.

Here are the step-by-step instructions on how to paint a pillow.

supplies:

pillow cover

fabric paint

angled brush

carbon paper

pencil

a piece of fabric with a black and white spotted pattern lies partially over a sheet of plain brown cardboard. the fabric appears slightly wrinkled.

1. Add cardboard inside the pillow cover

After you choose your pillow cover and the paint color you want to paint the pillow?

Print out the monogram.

Then add a piece of cardboard inside the pillow cover so the paint doesn’t bleed through to the other side.

a hand with light-colored nail polish holds a sheet of gray paper partially covering a black and white fabric with an abstract spotted pattern.

// carbon tracing paper //

2. Trace monogram

Place the piece of carbon tracing paper on top of the pillow cover.

Then add the monogram on top of the tracing paper.

Trace around the monogram with a pencil.

This should transfer a light outline of the monogram onto the pillow cover.

a hand holding a blue paintbrush outlines block letters on white fabric with a black irregular dot pattern, resembling cheetah or dalmatian spots.

// angled paint brush //

3. Paint within the lines

Now the monogram is traced onto the pillow cover, all you have to do is paint the monogram within the lines.

Using an angled brush for this makes it so much easier.

I start by painting the edges and then filling in the rest of the letter.

a textured black "kw" design is stitched onto a white fabric with a bold black irregular dot pattern. the letters have an uneven, hand-painted appearance and glossy finish, standing out against the spotted background.

So I started painting and realized my mistake.

I was painting a black monogram onto black and white polka dots.

You couldn’t even see half the monogram.

Sigh.

The more I painted, the worse it got.

I almost started crying because now I had an awkward, half-painted, not-cute-at-all pillow cover.

And this is the point where the story gets started. I took a break. I took a deep breath. I drank a Diet Coke. Then, I returned to my not-cute pillow cover and stood and stared.

The longer I stared, four ideas popped into my head.

  1. I could just stop here and turn the pillow cover around so no one would ever know I tried to paint it.
  2. I could paint a hot-pink monogram instead.
  3. I could paint a flower in the middle.
  4. I could paint a white circle so the monogram truly stood out.

Four potentially good ideas that would help me snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

Which one do you think I chose?

Isn’t she so much cuter?

two white throw pillows with black polka dot patterns rest on a dark wooden bench. one pillow features a circular design with the initials "kwd" in bold black letters.

4. Trace a circle

I just looked around my house and found a circle that was about 2″ wider than the monogram on all sides.

I traced around it with a pen.

Then, I painted the entire circle white.

I know, you are probably thinking that I could have painted around the existing monogram, but I was worried it would look messy. So I just painted the entire circle white.

It took three coats of paint to cover up the polka dots.

5. Paint the monogram

After the white circle is dry,

Place the piece of carbon tracing paper on top of the circle and add the monogram on top of the tracing paper.

Trace around the monogram with a pencil.

And paint the monogram with black paint.

6. Add dots around the edges of the circle

After I painted the monogram, I felt like the edge of the circle just needed something.

So I painted dots.

I just dipped a brush with a round tip in the paint and added the dots.

And now?

Meet my victory.

One more time.

From this.

To this.

And the moral of this craft tale?

Sometimes crafts turn out perfectly.

And sometimes they don’t.

When a craft speed bump like this comes along?

Pivot and just like my father said, remember to snatch victory…

…from the jaws of defeat. 🙂

PS So what do you think? Should I have chosen one of the other options? I’d love to hear your opinion.
