Grandmacore Bedroom Design Plan – Thistlewood Farm

Looking for grandmacore bedroom design ideas? Here’s the design plan (with room mock-ups) for our blue and white bedroom makeover.

Okay friends.

Do you want to come along on a little planning journey?

Ever wonder how I plan out a room?

Where I start?

Where I get my inspiration?

Where it all begins?

Do I ever make mistakes along the way?

I literally laughed out loud when I read that last statement I typed. I am the QUEEN of mistakes. The secret to making mistakes? You don’t let them define you. You don’t let them become anything more than a minor speedbump in the entire design process.

And most importantly? You don’t let them stop you from designing.

Here’s our room. Here’s where we are starting. A couple of things to note about this space.

  • this rrom is decorated for fall (it’s the last picture I had of this space)
  • it pretty much looks the same except without the pumpkins
  • I need to replace this rug (I love it, but it has so many stains that you can’t see)
  • I’m going with a Grandmacore theme (kind of like cottagecore except with a few more vintage items)
  • I mocked up the space with different items and I’ll walk you through the entire process

Are you ready?

Let’s DECORATE.Grandmacore Bedroom Design Plan – Thistlewood Farm

// blue and white trellis rug //

This is the rug that I found that I started with.

Isn’t it pretty? I loved the layers of blues and the diamond trellis pattern is a classic.

You can see the rug here.

Let’s see what it looks like in the room.

a bright, airy bedroom with white furniture, a blue and white patterned rug, a bed with white bedding, and sunlight streaming through large windows with beige curtains. a small bench sits at the foot of the bed.

One quick note. This room has a super odd layout (it’s shaped in an L). I’ve tried different rug placements and sizes and an 8′ x 10″ works best in this space. The room just looks better with one large rug kind of centered in middle like this. I’ve tried a 9′ x 12′ before, but it took up too much space and looked awkward. This is just to say that sometimes you have to try what’s right for a room.

And then let the room speak to you.

I liked the rug, but I was worried the blue was too soft and there wasn’t enough definition.

So I decided to mock it up with curtains.

blue and white checkered curtains hang on a silver rod in front of a window, with sunlight shining through. the room has light-colored walls, a wooden table, and a small cabinet with a white flower arrangement.

// gingham curtains //

I was leaning towards these curtains.

The oversized gingham check would be perfect at the windows, to help balance out the rug.

You can see the curtains here (they come in tons of different colors).

Let’s see what they look like in the space with the rug.

bright bedroom with white furniture, a blue-and-white floral rug, a bed with white bedding, a white chair at a vanity, blue gingham curtains, and wooden floors. natural light fills the room.

Umm.

Nope.

Just nope.

WAAAAAY too much contrast.

So I tried another curtain option.

white curtains with vertical blue stripes hang on a rod in front of a large window, letting in natural light. the room has light-colored walls and a wooden floor, with a plant partially visible on the right.

// blue and white striped curtains //

A good basic blue and white strip.

The stripe looks like ticking, but it’s bolder, and there’s more white between the stripes.

You can see these curtains here.

Let’s see the new curtain and rug combination.

bright bedroom with white furniture, a white bed, blue and white patterned rug, dark wood floor, and large windows with blue and white striped curtains. decor includes a wreath, baskets, and a vanity with a chair.

Better.

But then I decided I didn’t really like the rug now (see what I mean about being wrong).

Sigh.

It was starting to look too much like my bedroom from high school (which is probably now back in style). I wanted a rug with a little gray (to help ground it with the floor) and a little more pattern.

So I found this rug.

an ornate area rug with an intricate floral and geometric pattern in shades of blue and cream, featuring a large central medallion and detailed border designs.

// gray and blue rug //

I love this rug.

The details are so pretty and there’s so much definition and pattern.

Plus, I really like a rug with a center pattern like this.

You can see this rug here.

Let’s see what this rug looks like in the space.

bright bedroom with white furniture, sheer curtains, dark wood floors, and a large white and blue patterned rug. artwork and decorative items are displayed on the dresser and walls, creating a cozy, elegant atmosphere.

Okay.

Now we are getting somewhere.

This is looking more like what I wanted in my brain.

Do you ever have that happen? Where you can see the room, but you just don’t know how to get there?

Come sit by me.

Now I needed artwork and accessories and look what I found.

two framed botanical art prints featuring watercolor-style illustrations of blue and beige flowers with leaves, set against a white background and surrounded by light wooden frames.

// blue and white artwork //

Arent’t these so pretty?

They are part of the new My Texas House drop for spring.

You can see this artwork here.

Now let’s see what they look like in the space.

bright, airy bedroom with white furniture, a large bed, light blue and white patterned rug, wall art featuring flowers, and large windows with sheer curtains letting in natural light.

LOVE.

LOVE.

LOVE.

Seriously.

I love how it’s all coming together.

a table lamp with a gold base and a tall, cylindrical white glass shade. a clear electrical cord with a switch is visible, coiled beside the lamp. the lamp has a vintage, elegant design.

// milk glass lamp //

Then I found the perfect grandmacore accessory—this little milk glass lamp that I’m going to add to a side table, and the room started coming together.

You can see this milk glass lamp here.

I found block print bedding and pillows and hydrangeas.

a collage of blue and white bedroom decor, including patterned pillows, quilt, framed floral art, a striped curtain, vase of white hydrangeas, an ornate area rug, and a lamp with a textured base and white shade.

Here’s what I’m thinking for bedding and a few new accessories.

Then I’m going to go vintage shopping (both my house, my mom’s house and the downtown McKinney square) for some truly authentic pieces.

bright, airy bedroom with white furniture, including a bed, desk, chair, and dresser. large windows with sheer curtains let in natural light. a patterned beige rug covers dark wood floors; wall decor and plants add warmth.

One more look at our design journey.

From this.

bright, airy bedroom with white furniture, a large bed, light blue and white patterned rug, wall art featuring flowers, and large windows with sheer curtains letting in natural light.

To this (minus the spider web on the mirror).

Wasn’t this fun?

If you ever have a rug that you need help with? Happy to try and put it into your space.

Stay tuned.

I plan to have this room pulled together in the next couple of weeks.

Hopefully.

But sometimes I’m wrong. Remember? 🙂
