Focusing on the good, acknowledging the not-so-good – and 2 pictures

Not-so-good

The good acknowledging — a short introduction to this piece.

The good acknowledging: Quick Notes

My young friend that I’ve mentioned in previous posts was scheduled to help me today. We were rained out.

Although that was not encouraging — for some reason I’m not discouraged either.

Good

After nine months of not being able to get to the store for carrots and cabbage (my mainstay) – I finally was strong enough to go.

Might sound insignificant but it was a big deal for me. I now have a good supply of carrots and cabbage.

Comfort food (more good)

Garlic is another mainstay in my diet. I doubt that many people consider it a comfort food. But I do.

My long-time friend and reader Julie in Utah sent me 6 pounds of her beautiful organic garlic.

It comforts me to look at it each day and know I have enough to get through the winter.

Good

Harvesting in spite of the disaster  that  ruined my garden last year (until I can get it back in shape):

(I explained the disaster in this post.)

Honey Nut squash are my favorites and I’m thrilled to have had such a good harvest for future meals.  At least a half dozen are still to be harvested.

(For more on Honey Nut Squash check out this post.)

Unable to carry this full basket into the kitchen for good lighting, I placed them  close to my open back door. And even with cloudy conditions outside, the light was better. (Not perfect – but better.)

honey nut squash and small watermelon

I have two watermelons that reached full size. One is in the frig and one is not yet ready to harvest.

A bonus was 3 small melons like the one in the picture above.  Was not expecting them to be any good, but when I cut them in half and sampled, they were just as beautiful and delicious as a fully sized watermelon!

Last year I planted spaghetti squash  but didn’t get any because I ended up on the floor unable to walk. Results of that ended in no harvesting. (For more on this delicious squash check this post.)

It’s been ten years in October since Bill died and I’ve not had spaghetti squash (another of my favorite veggies) in at least 11 years.

This year’s harvest has been wonderful.  Have another 4 large ones to harvest.

The picture below was also taken in front of the open back door.

The smaller squash are the ones that were buried in the tall grasses and didn’t get as much sun. Thrilled to say they’re delicious.

More good along with the not-so-good

I’m still getting tomatoes , although this will be the first year I won’t have any to get me through November and December.

Good

Am confident I should have an ample supply of potatoes once I’m able to get to them.

Final Thoughts

Fortunately for we humans, in most every situation that’s not-so-good, there seems to be some good  things sprinkled in to keep us going. We often have to look diligently for something we consider good. But the good will be there.

Many times for me I’ve been so wrapped up in the “bad” that I literally have not had any desire to see the good. Takes some discipline to get out of that mind set. But I had to in order to have the best chance of getting better. And some days I know it takes everything we have in us to be successful at that.

Experience has taught me that to get out of any bad situation with the best results possible it is imperative to focus on whatever good we find – even if it seems insignificant compared to what we are going through. (And it often will.)

Good – The best of the best

And by the way — you – my readers  — whom I consider the best in the world –  are tops on my list of good things to focus on.
