Chambray Coastal Clay Coasters, wow, that’s a mouth full but also the perfect title! This is Episode 3 in What Would Dahlia Make? You can go back to episode 1- DIY Shell Bowl and episode 2- Anthropologie Inspired Candles. All of these gifts are meant to also be easy DIY’s for holiday gifts. With my book coming out April 7, 2026 I decided t would be fun to do a craft series from my FMC’s POV. While Dahlia is in her late 30’s, she is an old soul at heart. She loves anything handcrafted and made with love, hence the series.

Speckled Shell Clay Bowls & Anthropologie Inspired Candles

Every project in this series I want it to feel coastal, easy and a craft that can double as a gift. Coasters can be all three and can be made from all sorts of things but since I had leftover clay that’s what went with. But you can also do wood slices or pre-cut log slices. There are so many ways you can create cool looking ones but I decided to give mine an inlay look.

I went with oven bake clay but you can do air dry clay as well. It just takes around 48 hours to dry. Once I made my circles using mason jar lids I used a shell cutter from Etsy and made an inset in the middle. The next project will be using the left over center shell. Stay tuned for that.

I baked for 20 minutes at 225. Once they were cool and dry I painted them. Chambray to me speaks traditional, casual and, comfortable coastal. I watered Nantucket Blue down to a 2:1 ratio and brushed it on with a toothbrush. Then I used a paint brush to make the cross hatch design and to give it that texture. After that it was time to seal it with high gloss Mod Podge.

To make this project holiday ready just tie with a velvet ribbon. Then garish with some Thyme.
