If you’ve been following along with us for awhile now, you know we love a bunk room. Versatile, playful, and highly functional for families and entertainers, the modern day bunk room is elevated and fun. Throughout the years, we’ve played around with custom builds, new configurations, lighting options, railings design and color. Here are a few we haven’t shared yet to give you fresh bunk room inspiration and design tips.
Built-Ins That Feel Custom (Because They Are)

Custom built-ins are the heart of every bunk room we’re designing. Clean lines, integrated ladders, and thoughtfully placed niches make each bed feel like its own little retreat. We’re incorporating details like inset paneling, subtle trim work, and playing with bed size and orientation. In our Sunset Shores Project, we had the space to try horizontal upper twins paired with two vertical full-size underneath. The variation in bed-size is very functional when hosting whole families with adults who appreciate more space in the bed. The orientation feels open, and gets rid of the potential smothering feeling of sleeping on the bottom bunk.
Lighting That Elevates the Space

Lighting has become one of our favorite ways to elevate bunk rooms. Instead of relying solely on overhead lighting, we’re layering in sconces for each bed. It creates a cozy, personal feel while also being practical. In our Mapelton Project bunk room, we used both wall sconces and bed-side table lamps on a built-in shelf that creates plenty of useful light in each space and a varied look that adds to the design.
Textiles That Invite You to Stay Awhile

Bedding is where we really get to bring in softness and comfort. We’re leaning into high-quality linens, subtle patterns, and a mix of textures—think quilts layered over crisp sheets with a hint of stripe or a quiet floral.
Throw pillows and blankets add that finishing touch, making each bunk feel styled but still approachable. Nothing too fussy—just enough to make you want to climb in and stay awhile.
A Sense of Playfulness

The best bunk rooms feel like a little escape within the home. It’s a fun place to play with wallpaper, paint color, or interesting lighting. You might be designing with kids in mind, but if you mix whimsy with elevated touches, the bunkroom just as easily works for visiting adults or whole families.
Why We Love Them
At the end of the day, bunk rooms are about connection. They invite conversation, late-night laughter, and shared moments. And when they’re designed with intention, they become one of the most memorable spaces in the home. We can’t get enough of them.
