Dezeen Showroom: German brand Jan Kath has released a collection of traditional woollen rugs overlaid with abstract silk motifs, which aim to “surprise, unsettle and invite reflection”.
The Erased Heritage range takes traditional East and Southeast Asian rugs archetypes – which vary in pattern from region to region – and overlays them with linework or areas featuring cloud-like patches.
The Bidjar Highgate Enjoy rug is decorated with a scar-like silk pattern
One of the rugs in the collection is named Bidjar Highgate Enjoy, combining a rich, red Persian design with scribbled, scratch-like lines clustered in the corners.
The linework is overlaid in silk, allowing it to catch the light distinctively and differentiate from the body of the rug, which is made from hand-combed, hand-spun, hand-knotted Highland wool.
The rugs come in custom colours, patterns and sizes
“Simply reproducing the past is not part of my creative philosophy – instead, traditional patterns serve as a matrix, a kind of ‘mother’, from which contemporary elements seem to emerge,” said designer Jan Kath. “The result is a design that surprises, unsettles, and invites reflection.”
The carpets come in bespoke sizes and patterns.
