Secret garden bedroom: Quick notes

When clients return to us for another project, it’s always the greatest compliment they can pay us. So when some of our faves returned for the fourth time to create a space, we were thrilled to work with them again. And the only thing better than returning clients is returning clients who aren’t afraid to use color and love fun ideas… amongst other stellar qualities. So these sweet clients are basically the trifecta when it comes to projects and design. Today, we’re sharing this secret garden bedroom and ensuite bath!

It all started with the bonus room on the second level of their house. They have a generous open space in addition to the bonus room, and as their kids are getting older, they are interested in moving them both upstairs. So it made sense to investigate possibilities for this bonus room, and what we could do to make it work for their daughter.

secret garden bedroomTheir oldest loves a good escape with a great book. I love this for her — I’d disappear for hours with the same notion as a teenager, and I’ll always be a sucker for well-planned moments in a room. I immediately visualized a window seat with built-in bookshelves, and I’m lucky they were game. This one was really fun to plan. She now has an amazing space for reading and storage, to boot.

secret garden bedroomThis window seat is so deep; it has drawers on the front and is hinged at the back to lift for more storage. With the shelves, it’s basically a haven for childhood. In this little reading nook, we chose another wallpaper pattern and a nod to all things pretty in pink.

secret garden bedroomI absolutely adore this.

secret garden bedroomOn this wall, we placed her bed, effectively keeping the small storage area behind this door while covering it. We loved bringing these walls to life with a simple board-and-batten design alongside this gorgeous wallpaper pattern. It has such a timeless vibe; it will definitely grow with her for years to come.

secret garden bedroomThis wall is where the space really got interesting. When we started planning the space, the owner suggested we check what was behind this wall to see if there was additional space to work with. Say less. She was speaking our love language.

secret garden bedroomSo when we knocked back into the wall, we were amazed at how much available space was left behind by the original builder. We ended up knocking the wall back and bringing the framing forward to create plenty of space for both a bathroom and a spacious closet on each side.

secret garden bedroomI knew we couldn’t have “plain Jane” doors in this special space. I love that they were game for some fretwork love, in addition to all the other splendid details. Jamin added these to some simple designs after they were installed; pocket doors definitely saved much-needed real estate in this case, especially in the smaller areas beyond. Hurray for detail and color!

secret garden bedroomWe placed a desk area for her here, where she can definitely handle all things homework in the future.

secret garden bedroomAnd here’s another glimpse of my favorite spot. Can you tell?

secret garden bedroomHere’s another look at that corner, before it was finished.

secret garden bedroomAnd here it is now!

secret garden bedroomOf course, we loved lighting up this area with beloved Kichler sconces. This way she has no problem seeing to read at night. We tied it into the bathroom space, as well.

secret garden bedroomThis entire room truly is a great example of synergy with wonderful clients + teamwork.

secret garden bedroomOnce again, here’s this corner before… You can see exactly how far up we raised the wall, as it’s now level with the ceiling on this side.

secret garden bedroomThis art was the perfect touch.

secret garden bedroomIn this corner, we brought in a dresser and some fun art…

secret garden bedroomWe thought the library card was oh-so appropriate with a nod to her love of a good story.

secret garden bedroomAnd here’s another glimpse into the doorway to her desk area.

secret garden bedroom

secret garden bedroom Since this was once their bonus room with double doors and was no longer necessary, we were happy to frame in the space while we did the other parts of the room, so it simplified the entrance and gave her more wall space.

secret garden bedroomWe were very meticulous with color inclusion as well, so that incorporating all the different elements felt intentional, bringing the room to a more unified finished product.

secret garden bedroomThis wall definitely called for something unique… so now that you’ve seen all those bedroom details, let’s check out the bathroom.

secret garden bedroomOur middle, Emerson, was invested in this room as she saw the design take shape. She’s stated that we really should stop sleeping on pink. I agree. So did this sweet teen, and we were thrilled to install such beautiful colors in her room.

secret garden bedroomAs I mentioned earlier, when we pushed back into the attic space and brought the wall forward, it created enough room in the bedroom for a full bath and a closet. Along with wallpaper galore.

secret garden bedroomThey’ve added a shelf on this side of the room for even more storage, which is a great addition given the room’s size.

secret garden bedroomAnd beyond this first area is the shower room. How fun did all this tile end up, coming together to create such a fun space?

secret garden bedroomBathroom details: wall tile / floor tile / hex tile / wallpaper / shower + sink faucet / tank lever / towel bar / towel ring / bath fan / vanity / mirror / sconce / runner

secret garden bedroom But let’s take a moment and admire this shower, shall we? I absolutely loved turning this square into a diamond shape with the overall finish.

secret garden bedroomThe best part? It’s pearlized. This is basically a sophisticated version of a Barbie shower, in the very best of ways. The shower floor is a deeper rose pink, and the larger hex tile is the prettiest of pastels, tying in perfectly with our wallpaper plans.

secret garden bedroomOf course, we loved that they were able to install glass in this space, keeping the room open and light.

secret garden bedroomFor the faucet details, of course, we chose Delta. The overhead, along with the hand fixtures, in that pretty finish make it perfect for the smaller shower.

secret garden bedroomWith no natural light within the space, they were glad for these Kicher mirrors, which are actually backlit. If you’ve been around for a while, then you’ve heard me rage on about how much I love these mirrors. They’re like flattering ring lights, adjustable to boot. They paired beautifully with the sconces, tying in the window seat to the rest of the space.

Another glimpse of that tile!

secret garden bedroom secret garden bedroomWe adore these views in this once unused attic space. It really came so far in the most brilliant of ways, and we’re so thrilled for our sweet clients.

secret garden bedroomMy photos don’t do it justice, but those lights are perfect for this area.

secret garden bedroomWe love the way all these details came together!
