Using hot glue: a concise orientation before we get practical.

// gold glue sticks  // sealing wax stamp //

Remember when we made those faux wax seals for Christmas?

The seals that look like wax, except they weren’t?

I tried to use real sealing wax, and it took FOREVER, and the wax didn’t really burn properly, and by the time I got enough wax melted to try and stamp it? The wax had already hardened.

Sigh.

I remembered why I put away my sealing wax in seventh grade.

And then?

I discovered that they make hot glue in different colors, and I found these gold glue sticks, and all of a sudden, wax seals (or faux wax seals) entered into my life again.

But why stop there?

I put my craft thinking cap on and decided I would take it to the next level for Valentine’s Day.

And I created these.

Pink Valentine’s Day seals.

And Red Valentine’s Day seals.

And clear Valentine’s Day seals with gold hearts.

I could have stamped these seals all day it was so much fun.

And it all started because I found this set.

You are going to want to be best craft friends with me after I tell you the price.

IT’S 30 PIECES.

Yes, 30 wonderful, incredible pieces for every single holiday or occasion. There are hearts and flowers and shamrocks and crowns and trees and bows and even a clock.

It comes with one handle that you can change out all the stamps.

three gold-colored metal rings with handles, each in a different shape: hexagon, scalloped circle, and plain circle, lying on a neutral, textured surface.

It even came with this situation.

I’m not sure what these are called, but you use them to form your wax into perfect shapes.

And the entire kit?

All 30 pieces.

Is under $14.

I KNOW, RIGHT?

And the amount of joy it has brought me is already in the zillions. So I think I’m ahead.

You can see the entire kit here.

several glue sticks in three colors—clear, pale pink, and red—are spread out on a light brown surface, overlapping slightly. the sticks have a smooth, cylindrical shape.

And just like I found gold glue sticks?

Did you know there are red glue sticks?

And pink glue sticks?

And clear glue sticks (you probably knew about those)?

Here are all my best tips for using stamps like these (learned from all my mistakes):

  1. Make sure you have your glue gun set to the lowest setting, you don’t want the glue too hot.
  2. Let your stamp sit in the wax for about 20-25 seconds (depending on how much wax there is)
  3. Don’t wiggle the stamp–keep it in one place
  4. Try to chill the stamp in between stampings (put a plate in the fridge and put the stamp on a cool plate)
  5. Don’t press too hard, or you’ll separate the seal from the edges of the wax
  6. Make sure your stamp doesn’t have excess wax on it if you are switching colors
  7. Decorate the stamp after it cools (more on this below)

Here’s a fun option for a seal.

I used the clear glue stick and stamped it with the heart from the kit.

After it cooled, I colored it in with this gold paint pen. I’ve tried so many different gold paint pens and some of them are so lame. They just aren’t GOLD. When I think of gold, I want it to look like 24-carat gold, not yellow. This paint pen is different because it has a brush tip (which makes it so much easier to paint with).

Using the paint pen, I just painted the gold onto where the heart had been stamped.

You can see the gold paint pen here.

an open kraft paper envelope reveals its inner lining, which features a pattern of pink and red hearts on a white background. the envelope rests on a brown surface.

One last tip for all your Valentines.

Take your envelopes to the next level.

This is just a basic envelope. I traced the edge of the envelope and cut out a piece of scrapbook paper.

Slide the piece of scrapbook paper inside the envelope and glue in place.

two brown envelopes are sealed with wax; one has a red heart-shaped seal and the other a pink seal. they are placed on pink and white patterned paper with small heart designs.

Then add your Valentine and add your Valentine seal.

Why have your Valentine’s be basic?

When they can be so “heart to resist.” 🙂

Happy Heart Day
