Japanese brands Miyake Design Studio and ASICS have teamed up to create sneakers that merge “advanced performance science with minimalist design” and draw on the structure of gecko feet.
The trainers, which come in a variety of colours, feature thick elastic “tape” that wraps over the foot and have a soft, fitted form based on wrestling shoes.
Called Hyper Taping, the collection is a “footwear project that merges advanced performance science with minimalist design,” ASICS said.

The design of the trainers was based on the footwear brand’s classic ASICS stripes, which Miyake Design Studio (MDS) – founded by fashion designer Issey Miyake – reinterpreted for the Hyper Taping collection.
“Inspired by its integration of structure and design, MDS conceived the concept of ‘taping,’ which stabilizes the body and supports movement,” ASICS said.
As well as the elastic bands that show the trainers’ taping inspiration, the shoes also have cushioned tongue wings and were designed with “finely adjusted contact” around the ankle to ensure a good fit.
They have a wrestling-shoe outsole
Hyper Taping was the first model to redesign an ASICS wrestling shoe and turn it into a trainer, with the design featuring a wrestling outsole that was designed to provide stability and a secure hold on the foot.
However, ASICS and MDS created a new mould to widen the shape of the wrestling outsole, so that it would support everyday wear.

The shoe also features an Ortholite sock liner and Flytefoam Propel insole to create comfort with a thin sole design.
“Its design is inspired by the distinctive structure of a gecko’s foot, offering not only strong grip performance but also a striking visual expression,” ASICS explained.
Apple and Issey Miyake create expandable “extra pocket” for iPhones
This marks the first time that the Issey Miyake fashion brand has collaborated with ASICS, as well as the launch of Issey Miyake Foot, a new project from MDS.
“‘Issey Miyake Foot’ is a project that studies the human foot to develop footwear that brings new perspectives and proposals to everyday life,” MDS said.
“At its foundation lies the deep respect and unwavering trust built through both companies’ many years of creating and developing products in Japan.”
Its shape draws on gecko feet
The shoes, which launch later this month, come in three different colours: black, grey and a bright lime green with blue details.
Issey Miyake has previously collaborated with footwear brand Camper to create collapsible “second skin” footwear and with technology brand Apple on an expandable “extra pocket” for iPhones.
