Zaha hadid architects: Quick notes

Architecture studio Zaha Hadid Architects has unveiled its design for Malpensa Hospital in northern Italy, which will encircle gardens and landscaped rooftops.

Set to be built between Milan and Varese, the building will unite the existing Gallarate and Busto Arsizio hospitals into one healthcare facility that provides services to approximately one million local residents.

Commissioned by Lombardy Regional Health Authority in an international competition, Zaha Hadid Architects will design and build Malpensa Hospital in collaboration with Italian architecture practice Studio Plicchi, engineering firm RINA and built environment consultants WSP.

The hospital will comprise five storeys and a basement level, across which will be outpatient and inpatient facilities, maternal and infant care wards, diagnostic and therapy zones, clinics and laboratories. These will encircle outdoor spaces.

A central pathway will cut through Malpensa Hospital on the ground floor to form a public route, connecting a plaza at the entrance with gardens and courtyards at the centre of the building.

Landscaped rooftop terraces will provide further outdoor space to patients and visitors, aiming to create a calming environment.

According to Zaha Hadid Architects, Malpensa Hospital will have a modular structure that can be expanded and adapted to suit new technologies, aiming to meet the future needs of the region.

“The new hospital’s design addresses three fundamental priorities: meeting the region’s growing demand for healthcare, integrating advanced medical technology with human-centric design and ensuring the community has access to medical services of the highest quality,” said Zaha Hadid Architects.

“The project represents the holistic integration of healthcare innovation, local heritage preservation and ecological regeneration, creating an inclusive and sustainable campus to serve its community today while adapting to the needs of tomorrow.”

Aluminium panels will clad the exterior, with curved elements protruding from the facades to form planters.

Interior spaces will be lined with wood and textile materials, including areas dedicated to social, educational and cultural activities designed to build connections with local communities.

The landscaping at Malpensa Hospital will involve preserving existing woodlands and establishing wetlands and bioswales to capture stormwater for reuse.
