First supertall skyscraper: a concise orientation before we get practical.

First supertall skyscraper: Quick notes

Miami’s first supertall skyscraper, set to become the city’s tallest, is currently under construction in the city, with four of the building’s nine offset cubes now structurally complete.

Located in Downtown Miami, Waldorf Astoria Hotel & Residences Miami was designed by Sieger Suarez Architects and Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott. Once complete, it is set to rise a total of 100 storeys and will top out at 1,049 feet (319.7 metres), making it a supertall skyscraper and the city’s tallest building.

The Waldorf Astoria Hotel & Residences has reached 50 out of 100 storeys

The building consists of nine glass-enclosed cubic volumes stacked on top of one another, and slightly offset from the volume above and below, as shown in renderings released on its announcement in 2022.

When finished, it will be Miami’s first built supertall skyscraper, although other supertall skyscrapers, such as a Dolce & Gabbana tower and a Foster + Partners project are not far behind for the title.

According to the team, concrete has been poured up to the 50th storey, marking the completion of four of nine of the building’s cubes.

“The project has successfully poured 50, or half, of its 100 floors and is rapidly progressing with an average of pouring one floor every 10 days,” said the team.

“With the completion of the 50th floor, four of the tower’s signature glass cubes now rise above the Miami skyline, offering a first glimpse of the iconic silhouette taking shape.”

Construction images also show some glass cladding wrapped around the lower stories, and two large cranes and scaffolding travelling the length of the building.

Canada’s tallest skyscraper becomes first in country above 100 storeys

Developed by PMG, one of the developers behind 111 W 57th Street in New York, the building is set to contain 360 private residences and 205 hotel guest rooms managed by Hilton Management Services.

It is set to be completed in 2028, two years after its original completion goal of 2026.

Miami has several skyscrapers under construction across the city, although reports show that buildings are incrementally sinking in the city’s barrier islands, such as Porsche Design Tower, Faena Hotel and Trump Tower III.

Elsewhere across North America, a skyscraper designed by Hariri Pontarini Architects under construction in Toronto just became the Canada’s tallest building.
