Paint wood look. A brief context to set expectations.
Paint wood look: Quick notes
Paint a wood look finish…so quick and easy with paint and stain!
Hello, beautiful friends!
I hope you had an amazing fall weekend. My husband and I were in the Charlottesville area (Orange, VA, to be exact) staying at the Mayhurst Estate. The mountains are GLORIOUS this time of year. SO much beautiful color. I’ll be sharing all about it soon, maybe next week. You’ll definitely want to visit Mayhurst, I promise!
Okay, today, I am sharing all about the cabinet in the morning room/lounge?? Ha! I have no idea what to call this room now; it doesn’t really matter either – lounge, morning room, or comfy sitting room. ha!
What does matter is what I did to this amazing piece.

Well, and what I did to make it go better with the current furnishings. As you can see, browns, tans, and a more coastal vibe are going on.
So, the reddish finish was not going to fly.
I knew I’d either darken it when staining it OR lighten it with paint and faux wood finish (stain).
And, of course, that’s precisely what I did!
Do you know why??
Because it’s SO much easier than stripping all of that wood in incredibly hard places to get to.
TAPE
The first thing I did was tape it to protect the glass.

SAND
Next, I lightly sanded all over.

Just enough to remove the slick finish.
After that, I experimented with various paints and stains to achieve the desired look.

I decided on Algonquin and Cappuccino Stain and Finishing Oil.

Look at that amazing, rich color. I love how the stain grabs the nooks and crannies. All of that just adds to the depth and overall wood look.
PAINT
Then I got to painting.

The inside got painted in Ash, which is a lovely, soft black. Apparently, I didn’t take a photo of that except for the finish photos. Whoops.
STAIN
Once the paint was fully dry (I waited several days), I applied the stain with a chip brush…

…and then used an old rag (old white t-shirt) to wipe it…

…to give it a wood look.
Here’s another look…

I love this effect!

That’s it! A whole new look, simple really!
REVEAL

I love the dark interior.

That color works perfectly in here now.

I did another one similar to this.
